the case of the lost taxes
or how you end up paying more for an unpaid tax fine, than what you actually paid in taxes this year.
context: the other day i got a lovely letter in the mail that said they haven't received my tax forms yet and i have 20 days left to hand them in or else i have to pay a fine. "weird," i obviously think, because i distinctly remember having filled out my tax forms (with a witness!!) in february of this year. anyway i had the foresight to have a copy of my tax forms on hand (with the date) and hoped that showing it to the local office would clear the mistake up and they'd waive the fine.
turns out they cant do anything because a copy of the official tax forms i already sent in and cant retrieve anymore because someone lost them, does not count. apparently.
i think the dumbest part of this whole ordeal is that im paying double for the fines than what i wouldve paid in taxes. so stupid. next time im handing in my tax forms in person.
